The IBMS Clinical Scientist Certificate of Attainment is an experiential programme (CSCAER) for HCPC registration as a clinical scientist.

The route is available if you are working in the UK in healthcare science with an MSc degree, or equivalent-level qualification. Through a combination of your education, training and professional experience, it can demonstrate that you meet the minimum level of practice required to register with the HCPC as a clinical scientist.

The award is offered in four specialist areas of practice:

  • Clinical Biochemistry

  • Clinical Immunology

  • Haematology

  • Clinical Microbiology

This route is based on prior learning and training that has been completed before the application is made.

You must be able to evidence M-level practice against the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for clinical scientists – i.e. you must already be working at the level of a registered clinical scientist and be able to meet all the HCPC clinical scientist Standards of Proficiency through your academic knowledge and professional experience.

How you can apply

You will be expected to:

  • Be in a role where you are making clinical decisions and providing scientific advice to clinicians and other healthcare professionals that affect patients’ diagnoses and treatment.

  • To have received appropriate training and assessment for your current role to demonstrate that you have the relevant knowledge and practice in one of the above named specialisms, through the submission of a portfolio of evidence mapped to the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for clinical scientists and a viva voce examination.

Please read our guidance to candidates before beginning your application.

Having read the documentation, if you meet the criteria, please contact equivalence@ibms.org for an application pack.
