Available to candidates taking specialist training, the Molecular Pathology Module is also available as stand-alone to already trained and experienced individuals working in cellular pathology.

The module will enable you to extend your knowledge and skills to accommodate the integration of molecular pathology techniques.

Applying for the module

If you are already qualified and experienced at or above the specialist level you are eligible to take this module in a standalone capacity. To apply, you must complete the specialist diploma application form, selecting the option for the module.

The Molecular Pathology Module will be issued on receipt of payment and acceptance of the application by us.

As a minimum requirement, you must be an IBMS Licentiate and be working in an IBMS training approved laboratory. The module is not available to IBMS Associate members or if you are undertaking pre-registration training.

Examination

Exams are held in an external location, not at your place of work. This could be at our London office or at a location that is more convenient to both you and your examiner.

Successful completion of the Molecular Pathology Module does not confer eligibility for the award of a Specialist Diploma, nor does it enable you to upgrade from an IBMS Licentiate to an IBMS Member.

Please note

If you are not completing the Molecular Pathology Module as part of the Cellular Pathology Specialist Portfolio please refer to the full candidate guidance on completion. This contains specific instructions on portfolio compilation and selection of evidence.

The fee is inclusive of the end-point assessment but does not cover the cost of your travelling expenses for the end-point assessment, for which you or your employer is responsible.

Completing the module

Each section of the Molecular Pathology Module requires you to demonstrate knowledge and competence of your practice.

If your employing laboratory does not undertake some, or all, of the prescribed molecular pathology techniques and does not employ individuals with the knowledge and experience to deliver the necessary training, there may need to be an arrangement with another laboratory to provide the required additional training experience.

The assessment

The final assessment for this module differs from the Specialist Portfolios assessment as it does not include a presentation or laboratory tour. It is in two parts:

Part one

Through a review of the Portfolio of Evidence, a check of the record of laboratory training to ensure that all components have been signed off and to verify appropriate training has been undertaken.

Part two

A 30 minute oral examination to examine your knowledge and understanding of the module.

Once your training officer submits a completed request for the appointment of an external examiner the assessment process begins. This must be accompanied by a paper copy of your record of laboratory training and a paper copy of your portfolio of evidence, together with electronic versions of both.

This will trigger the appointment within six weeks of the external examiner with expertise in molecular pathology in the context of cellular pathology.

The external examiner will be sent a copy of the record of laboratory training and portfolio of evidence to review within 2 weeks. Your training officer will receive confirmation that this stage has been completed.
