Supervision of Biomedical Support Staff

We have reviewed our policy that provides professional best practice guidance on the supervision of biomedical support staff

In order to promote standards of best practice, the IBMS routinely produces reviewed documents that the give the profession universal standards for running safe and efficient high-quality services.

In our latest review, we revisit the supervision of biomedical support staff - a pertinent issue that has become even more important since the COVID-19 mass testing centres have been in operation.

The document establishes the meaning of Biomedical Support Staff, outlines the premise of the workforce's skill mix, and clarifies three different types of supervision (direct, indirect and remote) and when each of the three is appropriate.

The document also outlines the general scope of practice of Biomedical Support Staff and what procedures should and should not be deemed suitable for non-HCPC registered staff.

IBMS President Debra Padgett has commented:

Our Biomedical Support Staff are a valued and integral part of the modern pathology laboratory without whom we would not be able to provide the full range of services our patients expect.

This document provides the framework for best practice for deployment of support staff whilst ensuring they have the environment to continually flourish and develop in their roles.
